Clara Baker

About

Clara - age 4 or 5

Clara Baker
is a celebrated producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and audio engineer. Known for her proficiency on fiddle, guitar, banjo, and bass, her instrumental skills and technical expertise form the backbone of her production work.

Clara was raised in a musical household and started studying music, writing, and releasing songs at a young age. Her sophomore release, Things To Burn (2019), was recorded live to tape in a Wisconsin living room with Grammy-winning engineer Brian Joseph (Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver) and avant-folk experimentalist Shane Leonard (Anna Tivel, Josh Ritter). Atwood Magazine called it “soul-stirring”, and East Portland Blog called it a “must-hear… one of the best albums of 2019.”

The process of recording Things To Burn inspired Clara to go back to school and become an audio engineer. It was there she learned that less than 5% of producers and engineers are women. Determined to change this, she has been working in studios as a producer and audio engineer ever since. Her swift accomplishments in her field earned her an invitation to become a voting member of the Recording Academy.

In addition to writing songs and producing, recording and mixing for artists, Clara also composes music for film and TV.  She also tours occasionally as a “sideman” on fiddle, guitar, and vocals, most recently with Margo Cilker, An American Forrest, and many others.

Saint Somewhere

Saint Somewhere is the cinematic folk project of producer, songwriter, and fourth-generation violinist Clara Baker. Blending stringed instruments and quiet, confessional lyrics with sweeping, textured production, Saint Somewhere’s songs live and breathe in the blurred lines between.

REVIEWS & PRESS

“Baker has mastered the lyricism required to tell good stories above a rich musical landscape”

-THE WILD HONEY PIE (full review here)

Clara Baker is not your average “folk singer/songwriter.” Come the end of Things to Burn, we may not be calling her a folk singer/songwriter at all. She manipulates sound and texture at will in “Middle of the Night,” immersing herself and listeners in a raw and fragile state so as to evoke a soul-stirring experience.”

-ATWOOD MAGAZINE (full review here)

“Baker has given the receptive listener a privileged entry into her raw and fragile world with Things To Burn. Go trust her generosity of spirit and get hooked on her vision.”

-FATEA MAGAZINE (full review here)

“…a treasure of dynamic verses, beautifully expressed vocals, [and] inventive instrumentals”
